The Night Windows series takes its name from Edward Hopper’s 1928 painting and reflects the introspective pause one has when gazing into a lit interior from outside. Since 2007 Sarah has collected windows across the US and internationally. The daily practice of noticing these moments illuminates the constant passage of time. The paintings are titled with the dates the images were captured, location, or small details seen inside. They are primarily created in oil, but Sarah experiments with media, surface and scale to push the psychological experience of a mundane subject. Utilizing dark flat negative space around the window pulls the internal experience of the viewer forward. The collection represents one way she considers consistent ideas of place, voyeurism, loneliness, parallel worlds, the illusions of the everyday, and longing. The lit window can be seen as a symbol of hope, warmth, and stability, even when the location seems unfamiliar or closed off. Her objective is to invite the viewer to pause and reflect, wherever they may be, much like this ordinary experience unconsciously can.
