Welcome to my limited collection release of Night Windows original paintings! This body of work has become a ritual in my life for almost two decades. The series takes its name from Edward Hopper’s 1928 painting and reflects the introspective pause one has while gazing into a lit interior from outside. The daily practice of collecting simple windows marks the constant passage of time. Many of the titles are dates, times, locations, and sometimes small details found within. I utilize dark flat negative space to illuminate the window and pull the internal life of the viewer forward. They are primarily created in oil, but I’ve experimented with media, surface and scale to push the psychological experience and bring intrigue to an otherwise mundane subject.
This collection release is small format works. Night Windows represents one way of considering consistent ideas of voyeurism, loneliness, parallel worlds, the illusions of the everyday, and longing. The lit window can be seen as a symbol of hope, warmth, and stability, even when the location seems unfamiliar or closed off. My objective is to slow down, invite you to pause and notice what this common unobserved event might bring up, much like the ordinary experience of passing a lit interior unconsciously can. I am so thrilled that since this body of work has grown, friends and family have sent their own window views and the range of locations has continued to grow.
